THE WALKING DEAD is Getting a VR Game in 2018

For over a decade, Robert Kirkman‘s comic book series, The Walking Dead has taken fans into a world where the zombie apocalypse never ends. While the series has found even greater success on television and video games, it’s about to head into the uncharted lands of virtual reality.

Via Variety, Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment made the E3 announcement that Skydance Interactive is developing more multiple VR games based on The Walking Dead, with the first title slated to be released in 2018. According to Skybound’s Dan Murray, “We’ve been approached by everyone under the sun” about turning The Walking Dead, into a VR game,” before later adding that Skydance “had a very original take on it.”

Details about the first Walking Dead VR title are scarce, but it will reportedly feature new characters and a new setting to explore.

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series has already proven that the world of the comic and the TV show can handle narratives with original characters that remain true to the spirit of the original stories. And we suspect that the Telltale Series may serve as an inspiration for the new VR titles, since the games will reportedly immerse players in deeper story-lines. More pointedly, the walkers will be treated as “something that happens in the background” and the focus will be on human interactions.

That said, it could still be a lot of fun using the VR arena to take out walker hordes. But it may be some time before we get a chance to see what the first title looks like. The initial report was unclear about which systems would receive The Walking Dead VR, but Playstation VR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive appear to be likely platforms.
