When we reported in May that a movie based on the Tetris video game was in the works, we speculated but ultimately had no idea just what this movie could even be about. Now, it appears the filmmakers may be going a more philosophical, or at least less literal, route, because it’s now being reported (via Empire) that the Tetris movie will be the first film in a sci-fi trilogy.
“Purely because the story we conceived is so big,” producer Larry Kasanoff said. “This isnât us splitting the last one of our eight movies in two to wring blood out of the stone. Itâs just a big story.”
At this point, we can at least rule out one thing the Tetris movie won’t feature: Colorful anthropomorphic blocks walking around and disappearing into each other when they form perfect lines. “Weâre not going to have blocks with feet running around the movie, but itâs great that people think so,” Kasanoff said. “It sets the bar rather low!” He continued, “We want the story to be a surprise, but itâs a big science-fiction movie. I came up with the idea as I was thinking about Tetris and the theme of creating order out of chaos.”
Who knew that Tetris could be so deep? Even with this new information, speculation may be futile, as people closer to the project than we are don’t seem to have a handle on what this movie will be: “No one has come remotely close to figuring out what weâre doing,” Kasanoff said.
Tetris may not be the only classic game making its way to the big screen…
