The Smiths, N.W.A., Nine Inch Nails Nominated For Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

The induction for the Rock and Holl Hall of Fame Class of 2016 is set for April 2016. That’s over half a year away, but there’s plenty of legwork to be done before then, like sorting through the eligible nominees to decide who is worthy of inclusion, for example. The nominees were actually just announced, and the group is a real mixed bag, consisting of acts who have tried and tried again to get in, as well as performers who are hoping to go one-for-one in their attempts.

In order to be eligible, acts have to have released their first album or single in 1990 or earlier. This year’s nominees are, in alphabetical order, Chaka Khan, Chicago, Cheap Trick, Chic, Deep Purple, the Cars, Janet Jackson, The J.B.’s, Los Lobos, N.W.A, Nine Inch Nails, The Smiths, Steve Miller, the Spinners and Yes.

There are a lot of first-timers here, like Jackson, whose just-released album Unbreakable was included on our list of 40 Must-Hear Albums for Fall 2015. It seems kind of crazy that Nine Inch Nails is already eligible for the Hall of Fame, but the Trent Reznor group’s debut album Pretty Hate Machine came out in 1989.

If there’s one candidate for the public to rally behind, it’s Chic: the disco and soul group, which you probably know for “Le Freak”, has been nominated a record ten times, but to no avail. You also might know Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers as the guy who played guitar on Daft Punk’s last album.

Point being, fans have an opportunity to help decide which acts get in, so vote here and let’s do the right thing.
