This week a new rumor suggests that the Disney Corporationâowners of LucasFilm and the Star Wars franchiseâwill be immediately suspending production of all merchandise or products depicting the for-better-or-worse-iconic “slave Leia” costume from Return of The Jedi. Based on a Facebook comment made by comic book artist J. Scott Campbell, who has had his work on the cover of the Star Wars comics in the past, the company no longer allows artists to draw Leia in the costume, and they have already cancelled plans for a Leia statue in the outfit that was scheduled for this year. We’re hoping that the move will mean the companies will be producing more Leia toys featuring her in the white gown that she actually wore for the majority of her appearances in the films. Or how about that new figure based on Leia’s appearance at the Yavin Medal Ceremony at the end of A New Hope? If we’re looking for some variation from the mock-turtleneck smock, let’s all get one of those.
Join Jessica Chobot as we discuss the reasons why we think this move is a step in the right direction for the company but why we won’t be throwing away our old Leia toys either, on today’s Nerdist News!
