The ‘REQUIEM FOR A DREAM’ Score is Coming to Vinyl this Record Store Day

Record Store Day is the annual gathering of independent record storeowners to coordinate new releases and other special music events, and it’s definitely one of the champions of the vinyl resurgence. It made vinyl an event. And with its success, RSD’s purview has expanded beyond the traditional album.

This April 16, one of Record Store Day’s most exciting releases will be the vinyl debut of Clint Mansell’s epic soundtrack for Requiem for a Dream. Darren Aronofsky’s masterpiece is one of the most depressing films of all-time, but Mansell’s sweeping score makes it much more palatable. His arrangements are tense and grandiose, and they’re cinematic in every sense of the word. “Lux Aeterna” (see above) and all of its variations, played by world-famous ensemble, the Kronos Quartet, truly bring the film to life, deepening our appreciation for Requiem’s abject portrayal of drug addiction. And now it will be enlivened in an entirely new way: atop the glossy, striated grooves of 180-gram vinyl.

The double LP will include two previously unreleased bonus tracks, as well as a digital download card. Only 5,000 copies will be available, so don’t miss your chance to grab one.

Mansell was first introduced to film scoring when Aronofsky hired him to score his excellent debut film, Pi. The artists have worked together several times since then, always to great effect; The Fountain, The Wrestler, and Black Swan are all Mansell/Aronofsky collaborations. Black Swan has already been vinylized, and in due time, hopefully the entire collection makes the transition.

What do you think? Excited for the score to live on vinyl? Do you still have PTSD-like effects from watching his movie? Let us know in the comments.
