THE RAY Becomes CW Seeds’ First LGBT Hero to Star in His Own Series

It’s taken quite a long time, but an LGBT superhero character is finally getting a shot at their own series in a medium other than comics. At the TCA CW panel on Thursday, the CW Seed announced another superhero web series. The animated Freedom Fighters: The Ray, which comes from DC TV guru Greg Berlanti and Arrow’s Marc Guggenheim, will introduce the first gay superhero to headline a series, which is something of a milestone. While there have been LGBT supporting characters in superhero shows before, there has never been one with an LGBT lead until now.

The Ray will premiere on the digital platform in 2017, and just like the CW did with their web series Vixen, the character will eventually cross over to live-action in the CW’s DC Comics universe. According to The CW President Mark Pedowitz, the current plan is to have the actor who lends his voice to The Ray eventually play the character on the various CW series.

But which The Ray will we get? Since 1940, there have been four different characters who have gone by the name “The Ray” at DC Comics. According to the report at Deadline, it seems that Berlanti is going with the second hero to use the name, Ray Terrill, who was the son of the original 1940s era hero. According to the official description, “Raymond “Ray” Terrill was a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. But before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a “genetic light bomb.” The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers. With these abilities, Ray realized he could go beyond reporting on injustice – he could take action to help stop it. Calling himself The Ray, he was recruited by Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters to fight violence and oppression wherever it exists.”

It seems that this is a hybrid of the original Ray origin story combined with the look and costume of the second Ray (which was designed back in 1992 by a young artist named Joe Quesada, who would later famously become the CCO of Marvel Comics). Putting the name Freedom Fighters ahead of the title suggests we’ll see a fair amount of Ray’s Freedom Fighter teammates, and the image released by the CW (which you can see above) shows his teammates Phantom Lady and Black Condor.
