The Queen of Crappy Robots Made a Terrible Hair-Washing Device

Fellow shitty robot subjects, behold our queen’s newest awkward invention–an absolutely terrible hair-washing machine.

Simone Giertz, the leading authority on building stupid, awful robots–and one of our favorite engineers here at Nerdist–is back with her latest invention, a battery powered (so don’t worry about her being electrocuted in the shower) device that allows the user to focus on cleaning the rest of his or her body while a big rubber hand repeatedly whacks way too much shampoo around the top of their head.

Besides the 6V battery pack, she used an an Arduino UNO microcontroller board and two servo motors, one to squeeze the bottle of shampoo, and the other to move the big rubber hand back and forth (“Rubber is great for protection–that makes sense in a completely different context too.”). This let her focus on brushing her teeth in the shower, all while lightly being hit upside the head repeatedly as globs of shampoo rained down on her. That’s what we call a “win-win.” Kinda.

If you are thinking to yourself, “Geez, that seems more like something you’d attach to an alarm clock,” guess what? She has! One of the first devices of hers we ever wrote about was a similar giant rubber hand attached to an alarm clock that repeatedly slapped her in the face.

The Swedish inventor recently joined Adam Savage’s team at Tested, and the two of them worked on building a popcorn dispensing helmet. It was wonderfully crappy too.

Never has a person built such totally useless items that have brought so much joy. Keep up the terrible work, oh queen.

What’s your favorite invention by Giertz? It would be awful if you didn’t tell us your thoughts in the comments below.
