Who is the Real Villain of Netflix’s THE PUNISHER Series?

After his successful introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Daredevil season 2, Jon Bernthal‘s Punisher is heading back to Netflix for his own solo series. This week, the word came down that Prince Caspian himself, Ben Barnes has joined the cast of The Punisher as one of the series’ lead villains. But is Barnes’ character really a crime boss who’s gonna challenge the Punisher? Or is he someone even more important from Frank Castle’s past? Today’s Nerdist News is on the case!

According to the initial report at TVLine, Barnes is rumored to be playing Bobby Saint, “the corrupt crime prodigy” who was John Travolta’s son in The Punisher film that came out in 2004. It has to be said that Bobby Saint barely had any scenes in that movie, and he was more important in death than he was in life. Would the Punisher’s redemption tour of duty on Netflix really use such a minor character as its big bad? To quote the Mighty Thor, “I say thee, nay!”

Nerdist News host and Detective Soap’s former partner, Jessica Chobot, has a much better theory to share. Remember the season 2 finale of Daredevil? There was a brief moment inside of Castle’s house where he retrieved a hidden packet that had the word “Micro” on it. That was widely seen as an Easter Egg for Microchip, the man who served as Castle’s tech guru, weapons master, partner, and even his friend during most of the ’90s. But Microchip (or Micro, in later stories) eventually had a major falling out with Castle and he may even be considered one of Castle’s most memorable adversaries. Could The Punisher series be introducing fans to a version of Micro who is Castle’s ally in the past and his villain in the present? There’s a good case to be made for Barnes to play both sides of a modernized, and “less Newman” version of Micro.
