Salutations, Wednesday Warriors! It’s that time of the week again—time to storm the gates and bring home a fresh stack of new comics. Before you head to the shop, arm yourself with a few recommendations. And for you big spenders out there, we also have a complete list of this week’s releases. This week, we simply could not be more excited for the release of Black Widow #1 from the ol’ Daredevil team of Mark Waid and Chris Samnee. Good news, it’s awesome.

BLACK WIDOW #1

Black Widow is one hell of a ride. This entire first issue is one long chase sequence in which the title character says next to nothing. Samnee and Waid took the dial and cranked it to 11, never slowing down, even to let you can catch your breath or wipe the sweat from your brow. Samnee’s art is still the best in the biz and he brings such intensity—and more than a little fun—to the action. Matthew Wilson is back delivering top notch, stunning colors, and Joe Caramagna is the King of Lettering. As far as first issues go, it’s hard to imagine one that grabs you any harder than Black Widow. We are so on board with this series it’s bordering on obsession. Seriously, Samnee, stop avoiding my phone calls. I’m in front of Mark Waid’s house and I want to talk about Black Widow.

PREDATOR: LIFE AND DEATH #1

Predator: Life and Death #1 from Dark Horse Comics

Predator has a long history with the Alien franchise. Despite the fact that they are very different creatures from very different stories and worlds, they’ve always crossed over well. Predator: Life and Death #1 somehow takes things a step further and actually feels like an Alien story, only it happens to start those murderous, hunting hulks known as the Predators. Dan Abnett and Brian Albert Thies channel James Cameron’s masterpiece Aliens big time in this first issue. You probably know how things are going to end up for the marines long before they set foot on the strange alien world, but that doesn’t mean reading it isn’t a whole hell of a lotta fun. This is the first issue in a new epic like the previous massive crossover Fire and Stone, which was supremely awesome. Can Dark Horse Comics pull off another big event featuring all these monsters? Time will tell, but they’re certainly off to a very good start.

DEADLY CLASS #19

Wes Craig deserves an altar built in his honor—a place where us village folk can go to pay tribute and worship freely. The dude is good, is what I’m saying. His frantic cartooning and stunning layouts make each new issue of Deadly Class a must read. Beautiful, violent, and sinister, Deadly Class looks like a cartoon, albeit a cartoon filled with blood and death. Rick Remender has the best creator-owned books on the stands and that is in no small part because he surrounds himself with talented folks like Wes Craig, colorist Jordan Boyd, and letterer Rus Wooton. It must be said that Wooton in particular gives Deadly Class a lot of its unique charm with his stylized balloons and use of color. Deadly Class #19 is so good it’ll make you want to give Rick Remender and Wes Craig a long, warm hug and thank them for putting this little piece of magic together.
