The POWER RANGERS Movie Nabs a Pair of X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Writers

Good news, everyone! A pair of writers behind the pretty good X-Men: First Class are coming on board to write the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers movie for Lionsgate. Also Roberto Orci is coming along to help develop the story and serve as executive producer.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz have been hired to write the Power Rangers film and Orci will be helping craft the story. In the meantime, the official synopsis has been that the live-action feature will involve a group of teens who must use their unique superpowers in order to save the world.

The concept doesn’t mention giant robots, copious martial arts, or monsters from outer space, but lets hope that all of the above will make their way into the third big screen adaptation of the ’90s live-action series from Saban Brands. At the bare minimum, cast Nicki Minaj as Rita Repulsa.

Miller and Stentz worked together on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Fringe, and the syndicated space drama Andromeda before getting the writing gig on Thor in 2011. Those aren’t exactly terrible jobs, and each had solid streaks of humor that kept things from getting too dour and dull. Hopefully they can bring some of the pep that the duo (and co-writers Matthew Vaughan and Jane Goldman) brought to X-Men: First Class.

Orci, meanwhile, will be directing Star Trek 3 for Paramount after parting ways recently with his longtime writing partner Alex Kurtzman. We can discuss the relative merits of their collective work, and who we’d like to see star in the film, in the comments.

Let’s just hope it isn’t super campy and is more adult like for those of us who watched this as a kid. It won’t happen but a man can dream!

  2. Jhonas says:

A little worried Orci seems to be involved in too many projects. Also for those who don’t know, the power rangers are still on air like season 20. How will this movie fit in? Will it be canon, will it even be mighty morphin?

  3. aidan says:

well this isn’t a… terrible start. solid writers and robert orci isn’t the worst choice (looking at you david goyer)
    this could be… ok… i guess
as long as i get some decently choreographed martial arts fights i should be ok.
