The Pixar SadLab: The Science Behind Your Tears (NSFW)

Sometimes, it feels like Pixar is less concerned with entertaining us, and more concerned with making us cry. Sure, laughter and pleasure are okay feelings, but it often can seem like Pixar gets its real pleasure from kicking us in the gut until we’re nothing more than a blubbering mess holding a bag of popcorn. And oh, they are so good at it. I mean, think you’d ever feel this way about an imaginary friend that lives inside a small girl’s repressed memories?

Damn you, Bing Bong. You should take us to the moon too. No one can hear you cry on the moon.

Well, those tears don’t happen by accident, they are the product of hard-working researchers at Pixar’s SadLab, where what makes us cry is less an art and more a science.

While really just a creation of the comedy group Above Average, this certainly feels like a real place, especially when they talk about the “ambush” method employed at the start of Up! Oh, yeah, an old guy and some balloons with a dog, this will be great. After five minutes, I wanted to stop the movie and go lie down for an hour (or, you know, a month) to recover.

What do you think is the most emotional moment in Pixar history? Share the scene that made you cry the most down in the comments section below so we can all have a good cry together.

(For the record, the color yellow is a very sneaky sad color.)
