HBOâs Game Of Thrones has introduced audiences to its fair share of killers, psychos, and monsters, but few are as viscerally terrifying as Gregor âThe Mountainâ Clegane. This weekend he has given another reason to fear him. Hafþór JúlÃus Björnsson, the near seven-foot-tall Icelandic bodybuilder and competitive strongman that plays The Mountain, has broken a strongman record that has stood for a thousand years.
An old Icelandic story tells tale of a man named Orm Storolfson who carried a log that weighed 640 kg (that’s about 1,411 pounds) three steps before his back broke from the pressure. According to the story, it took fifty men to lift the log for him. The World’s Strongest Viking competition was held this past weekend in Iceland, and to prove himself as the embodiment of every collective nightmare humanity has ever had, the man who answers to Thor set out to embarrass mythology itself. Björnsson carried his own 650 kg log five steps and kept his back in perfect working condition. Yes, defying The Old Gods and the New won him the competition. Björnsson than took to Instagram to celebrate as only The Mountain could, by boasting “NOTHING CAN STOP ME. NOTHING CAN BREAK ME.”
We are inclined to agree.
Don’t just take our word for it though. Watch the monumental achievement of Oberyn Martell’s bane for yourself. Then leave a comment below. I, for one, welcome our new Icelandic overlord.
