THE PREDATOR Trailer Brings an Upgraded Enemy to Earth

The last thing you want when to learn when facing a technologically advanced extraterrestrial with a fondness for mutilating its human prey is that it has been getting upgrades from across the galaxy. But in the first trailer for director Shane Black’s The Predator, our favorite heatseeking hunter is using hybridization to make itself more dangerous than ever.

This first look at the film begins with young Jacob Tremblay’s character opening up a package on Halloween (no surprise, since Shane Black loves setting his movies around holidays), which makes this feel like the horror movie version of E.T. It’s not clear who sent him the package; it might be Boyd Holbrook’s assassin character, who we also see being interrogated about a Predator crash site he’s found, but the timeline is unclear because the synopsis for the film says “a young boy accidentally triggers” the aliens’ return to Earth, which seems to happen when he starts playing with the items inside the package. To make matters worse, the Predators “are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species.”

Note to self: never send alien technology to a kid who might trigger an invasion by a nearly unbeatable alien who wants to ritualistically maim every human. That seems like a good rule for all of us.

The Predator, which also stars Trevante Rhodes, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown, Alfie Allen, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, Jake Busey, and Yvonne Strahovski, crashes into theaters this fall on September 14th.
