For the last three years, there’s been a new Thor in the Marvel Universe. When the Odinson was rendered unworthy, Jane Foster took up Mjölnir and claimed its powerâbut it’s come at a price. Because the hammer cleanses Jane’s body of all toxins each time she transforms, her cancer treatments have been rendered useless. As a mortal, her time is running out. And when Marvel Legacy begins next month, fans may be in for a stark reminder that even the Gods may die!
That cover is intentionally evoking the Death of Captain Marvel graphic novel, which depicted the demise of Carol Danvers’ predecessor, Mar-Vell, as he succumbed to cancer. Writer Jason Aaron and artist Russell Dauterman will chronicle Jane’s fate in “The Death of Thor,” which doesn’t exactly have the most optimistic title. And in the first preview page from the issue, Jane’s Goddess of Thunder is taking on Jennifer Walters’ She-Hulk, who hasn’t really been herself since Civil War II.
As for the Odinson, he has problems of his own. Malekith’s war of the realms has continued to expand…and not in the Odinson’s favor!
The situation may be even more dire in the future, as All-Black the Necrosword finds its way into the hands of Galactus, who becomes an even bigger cosmic monster who treats planets like Fruit Ninja’s produce practice.
We’ll see how and if Thor and the Odinson can survive the mounting threats when The Mighty Thor #700 hits comic book shops on Wednesday, October 18.
