Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, the latest cinematic adventure from the musical comedy trio The Lonely Island, hits theaters this weekend. In addition to being a wonderfully hilarious sendup of the pop star documentary, the movie features some honest to goodness sweet tunes. After all, what’s a “rockumentary” without a killer soundtrack?
Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer star as the three original members of the pop-rap group the Style Boyz. After finding international success as a trio, Samberg’s Connor decides to strike out on his own to become Conner4Real, a celebrated pop superstar and self-unaware numbskull. As we venture through Conner’s trials and tribulations, we are enlightened by some of his most popular songs, including “I’m So Humble” featuring Adam Levine’s hologram singing a sexy hook, “Finest Girl (Bin Laden Song),” and “Equal Rights” featuring P!nk, among others.
Nerdist sat down with Samberg, Tacone, and Schaffer to sort through the Popstar track list, getting the inside scoop on tunes like Conner4Real’s “Mona Lisa,” and the Donkey Boyz classic hit that spawned its own dance craze, “The Donkey Roll.” As we learned from the crew, who created the songs themselves, sometimes a stroke of genius comes to you when you least expect it. Watch and enjoy, and try not to get “Mona Lisa” stuck in your head for days after you see the movie!
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping stars Samberg, Taccone, Schaffer, Chris Redd, Tim Meadows, and Sarah Silverman, and is in theaters now!
