It was only a matter of time before The Lonely Island made a full-length mockumentary about a Bieber-esque popstar.
The SNL comedy trio behind such classics as âJizz in My Pantsâ and âIâm On a Boatâ are moving onto bigger and better things. Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Andy Samberg revealed details for a Judd Apatow-produced feature film.
A giant film poster was unveiledâwhich Kimmel called âvery Bieber-yâârevealing the movieâs title: Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. “We pitched other names to the studio,” Samberg told Kimmel. “I pitched them ‘Gremlins 3’ and they said, ‘No.’ So I was like, ‘Alright:Â Popstar: Never Stop Stopping!'”
At one point, the film was rumored to be titled Connor4Real, a moniker thatâs actually going to be the name of Sambergâs character. As a press release explains, Popstar will go âbehind the scenes as singer/rapper Conner4Real (Samberg) faces a crisis of popularity after his sophomore album flops, leaving his fans, sycophants and rivals all wondering what to do when heâs no longer the dopest star of all.”
Sambergâs fellow Lonely Islanders, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, directed the film, and it was written and co-produced by the full trio. Sarah Silverman, Tim Meadows, and Maya Rudolph will all join the troupe on-screen, making it an SNL family affair. Popstar drops on June 3 via Universal Pictures, and Iâd bet a “Dick in a Box” that weâre going to get some new, viral-to-be songs before then.
The Lonely Island have already been on a boatâwhere do you think they’re going to go next? Let us know in the comments.
