The Live Action GHOST IN THE SHELL Movie Has Its Villain!

Major Motoko Kusanagi is going to have her work cut out for her in the live-action Ghost in the Shell movie because the anime adaptation has apparently found its villain in actor Sam Riley.

Originally optioned by DreamWorks and Steven Spielberg in 2008, the live-action adaptation of the classic 1995 anime film Ghost in the Shell has seen quite a few turnovers in personnel over the past few years. Currently set to be released by Disney in March 2017, the film will be helmed by Snow White and The Huntsman director Rupert Sanders with a script by Straight Outta Compton screenwriter Jonathan Herman. Scarlett Johansson has already been announced as the film’s lead, the metaphorical “ghost in the shell” Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg who requires a full-body prosthesis to house her cyber-brain after an accident as a small child. And now we’ve got the movie’s villain cast, a mysterious hacker known as the Puppet Master. British actor Sam Riley, known for Joy Division biopic Control and Disney’s Maleficent, will step into the role, joining Johansson and Pilou Asbæk—the actor previously announced as Batou—the second in command under Major Kusanagi. This cast looks promising, so fans hoping for a live-action adaptation that could live up to the animated original may be getting what they ask for.
