The JV Club #3: Gillian Jacobs

Finally, a conversation that covers two of the most seminal influences on contemporary culture: playwright George Bernard Shaw and the oft-overlooked screen gem Mannequin Two: On the Move. All this and more with Gillian Jacobs, who turned heads as a child with an impressive array of homemade Halloween costumes long before she graced Community’s collegiate hallways.

  1. Iain says:

Until you guys talked about it in this episode, I thought The JV Club title was a reference to how your podcast focuses on what you and your guests were like back in K-12.

Now I know better, and I’m loving the podcast!

  2. A.A. says:

I absolutely love Gillian Jacobs in podcasts and I have to say this is one of my favorites with her. I’ve listened to it many times now since it came out in March. Such great rapport between two amazing women!

  3. Andrew Esposo says:

I have fallen in love, with Gillian Jacobs and this wonderful podcast series. Would love to see Ingrid Michaelson on here if you ever run into her!

  4. Dante says:

Hugo Weaving was the third in that Priscilla movie.

  5. Khristian says:

“Whatever makes you stick out like a sore thumb as a kid is what ends up making you a unique and awesome adult. So as long as you can hold on to those things and not let the embarrassment or peer pressure wear them away, you’ll really be thanking yourself when you get to be older, that you stayed true to yourself, that you pursued all your weird interests, be it Baroque music or George Bernard Shaw, and it’ll give you the best dinner party fodder if you let yourself be as weird as you want to be.”
fyi, this is going in my quote book.

Guys, I’m super remiss in not acknowledging all of the GREAT comments on this thread. I’m so glad you enjoyed this ep. I got all choked up reading them. Eeeeee!

  9. Jade says:

This has been fantastic. Gillian Jacobs is outstanding, and what an excellent interview. Also, if Stevie Wonder, Bjork and Radiohead could collaborate sometime, that’d be great, thanks.

  10. Leslie says:

That is- every time I’m walking down the street and listening to the emotional parts of this podcast…

  11. Leslie says:

Argh I tear up every time I walk down the street and I look like a crazy person. It’s nice to hear from such awesome ladies. If only I had listened to stuff like this in high school, I would have felt like- hey even the outsiders make it.

  12. Nick says:

Just wanted to say that I love your podcast Janet. I’m a 21 year old straight guy who lives in New Zealand, so im probably not meant to be listening to this haha, but it’s really great. This episode was the best. Thanks and hope you keep it up

  13. D# says:

Another fantastic episode! Loved the story about the grandmother and her eccentric-ness! I feel like I need to hug someone after listening to these. Always some feel good ness with the episodes and I love the inside story to how some of these actresses grew up.

  14. Anna says:

I’ve loved all of these podcasts! These are really personal, great interviews that show the honest personalities of these great women in pop culture today. I feel so connected to them after hearing about their very specific Halloween costumes, goth phases, and struggles to find their places in school.

I especially liked Gillian’s ruby-throated hummingbird – like her, I had a matriarch (my mother) who made my Halloween costumes every year, and one year when I was a child I was adamant about being a string bean. She stitched and stuffed a custom costume for me in the shape of a bean with big felt velcro-on peas.

Keep up the good work, this is currently my second favorite podcast! (Outdone only by Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s Startalk, and mostly only because of NDT’s sexy voice.)

  15. Maurice says:

Mae West might have said this in summation: “Personality is the most important thing to an actress’s success.” And, these dames have got it.

  16. Caleb says:

Good gravy, this is an incredible interview. Loved being a fly on the wall and hearing about Gillian’s amazing formative years. So great! Thanks, Janet!

  17. Kevin Osborn says:

Gillian was a great guest!! I am from and live in Erie PA, Wish I knew her grandma. Great podcast!!!

  18. Todd Mason says:

A very good session…GJ’s smart and engaged with the world and at least with some of its more interesting cultural product from an early age…that is indeed the kind of cool that we’re interested in here (or at least it mirrors some of the fun I was having at similar ages). Thanks, folks.

  19. jess says:

Oh Dear Baby Jesus, this is doing nothing to curb my Gillian Jacobs/Community obsession.

she’s right, i would’ve listened to the alphabet.

  20. Eligreg says:

Gillian also comes from a long line of wifes and mothers

  21. sheila says:

OMG, Gillian Jacobs, Y U SO PERFECT??

  22. Peter says:

This has become my favorite Nerdist podcast. Keep up the awesome work!

  23. Janet says:

Tom, please tell me you made it through more than just the 2 minutes it takes for Gillian to immediately correct me about that. 🙂

  24. Tom says:

Um…Six Sense (the movie) takes place in Philadelphia, not Pittsburgh.

  25. Clinton says:

Can’t ever go wrong with Gillian and/or Community. Well done!

  26. Iron Bars says:

Awesome guest! Love Gillian Jacobs and love Community!

  27. Andrew S says:

Weird, I woke up with Britta’s “pizza, pizza, me so hung-y” song in my head, then I mosey on over to the Nerdist and this is up!
