The JV Club #27: Elizabeth Laime

Podcast darling Elizabeth Laime muses about drunken poodle purchases, being at the bottom of a cheerleading pyramid, reconnecting with your junior high crush… and the heartbreak of loss when it visits you young. This could be considered a three-tissue episode.

Man every time I hear you tell the story about your parents passing…gets me every time. Such a powerful and wonderful episode. Loved hearing you both at the end saying you loved each other. 🙂 thx for the tears and smiles!

  2. Arlo says:

Despite having heard a few of these stories in part before due to being a big Totally Laime fan this was a truly excellent podcast. I don’t have anything insightful to add to the discussion here but just wanted to thank you for producing another episode which walks the line between comedy and genuine examination of the human condition.

  3. Todd Mason says:

Oh, and there was Another well-produced and -advertised web series that started at about the same time as BURNING LOVE, not quite as good, but with its points…including this short series about sexual harassment (and worse) of women in the military…WIGS:

  4. Alec says:

The part about Elizabeth asking her husband if he felt like he had known her parents was heart-wrenching. Even setting aside the trauma of losing both of them, that notion of not being able to share that relationship with someone else who you feel is just as special is really scary.

And thanks to both of you for being able to take the conversation to vulnerable places like that.

  5. Todd Mason says:

“Some of the stuff talked about are things I (as a man) will never experience[…]”

Never assume, Tyler. You might only rarely, or luckily never, feel threatened in that way, but men can be raped or otherwise harassed…and women can be predators (even if many more and most of the worst are men…who, obviously, can turn their unwelcome attention to men). And many of the women are predating (perhaps while simply arguing they’re simply dating, in some instances) boys and girls…as well as other adults.

Sorry you’ve had to endure what you’ve had to endure, Janet and Elizabeth (and Monia and other folks who might read this), and glad you weren’t messed with more or worse as well, when you weren’t. (You couldn’t be reading this if you faced the worst possible things, but no one needs the worst to have happened to have been horribly wronged and deserving sympathy, to say the least.)

And there are worse things than having a podcast about women having made their way to what they want to do with their lives, often overcoming various sort of tough or nasty obstacles, be termed as feminist…

    Good show. Thanks.

  6. Vincent S says:

My heart broke when Elizabeth talked about her parents. I think it’s great that they found each other in the end. I don’t think I have the words to say because I have been fortunate enough to not have gone through such a bad event but my heart is just sank. Thank you Elizabeth Laime for the story.

  7. Steve P says:

The passing away of Elizabeth’s parents is so heart-wrenching, it’s really uplifting and powerful to hear her so funny and life-affirming. I appreciate the open sharing of emotions and personal histories. A wonderful episode to listen to.

  8. Vincent S says:

I don’t know why but I’ve been liking the past few episodes alot. Thanks Janet/ more formal name of recognition.

  9. Danielle says:

So I’ve finished the podcast since my last post and I’m writing this comment through teary eyes. Janet, your podcasts always have amazing ability to weave in and out of different topics and I swear I go through a complete range of emotions while listening to the stories of you and your guests. As a listener, i’m so grateful that you all feel comfortable enough to share your lives with us on a weekly basis.

  10. Tyler says:

What an episode. I feel like I just went on a really draining, but incredibly satisfying road trip. Some of the stuff talked about are things I (as a man) will never experience, but I really admire the courage it took to discuss these things. Thank you so much to the both of you for putting this out here.

I can’t wait until my niece is old enough to listen to podcasts, because I’d be proud if she had role models like Janet and Elizabeth.

  11. Brandi says:

I sometimes put podcasts on my ipod to listen at work, I’m so grateful that I didn’t do that for this one, I’m still crying. This was such an emotional but amazing podcast. You do such a good job Janet. Thanks for sharing Elizabeth, you are so remarkable.

  12. Curtis says:

On the topic of high school sweethearts – My parents are the prototypical couple. They are the small-town quarterback and the blonde cheerleader who started dating in high school and throughout all of college. They’re still married and whatnot, but it doesn’t stop me from giving them crap.

  13. Ciara says:

Such a funny yet moving yet funny again podcast. Thanks to you both.

  14. Danielle says:

You ladies were spot on about high school sweethearts! My parents met and dated in high school, got married, had kids etc. They were married for 26 years and recently divorced. I hadn’t really thought of it before, but they really have turned into 21 year old bachelors. I think they feel like they have to make up for the college years of sleeping around and serial dating.

  15. Overlord says:

    Just thank you Janet!

    -signed, a laimewad

    P.s. Emily Gordon next maybe??

  16. Monia says:

And now I’m at the end of the show and I’m crying at work listening to Elizabeth’s story. So heartwrenching.

  17. Monia says:

Thank you for the frank discussion on sexual predators and assault. Seriously. Thank you. I really needed to hear that. I’ve been getting blindsided by so much hate by people who don’t think it’s an issue at all and trivialize it…I’m glad to get to hear two wonderful women talk about this frankly.

Also, I’d highly recommend “The Invisible War” about sexual assault in the military. I believe it’s in theatres now. Incredibly enlightening to the numbers and how fucked up the system is. I’ll look into the webseries you mentioned, too.
