THE FORCE AWAKENS Art Book to be Released with Film

We all have the same plans for December 18 and that’s to go see Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, and then argue about how it compares to the originals. Now we can add another item to our collective itinerary and that’s heading to our local bookstore to pick up The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

StarWars.com announced the book’s release and said it will “explore the sketches, storyboards, and concept designs that sparked the latest film in the Star Wars saga.” The book, written by Phil Szostak, will look at “the earliest gathering of artists and production designers at Lucasfilm” to “production at Pinewood Studios” and the final “post-production at Industrial Light & Magic.”

In what will probably end up being a must-own for both Star Wars and film enthusiasts alike, the book will also have interviews with many of the film’s creators, and include hundreds of “beautiful works of art that include production paintings, concept sketches, storyboards, blueprints, and matte paintings.”

They even released a first look with the book’s cover, a beautiful painting of Kylo Ren by Star Wars concept artist, Doug Chiang. We can only hope the rest of the book looks this gorgeous.

Considering J.J. Abrams decision to return to more practical effects, and the inherent enormity in creating a universe with the breadth and scope of Star Wars, this book is definitely one to get excited for.
