The First Cat Café Train is Carloads of Cuteness

Everybody has their own way of occupying themselves on the train. Maybe you like to read a good book, watch a very tiny movie on your phone, or just stare out the window for a while and ponder how fast Tails’ tails need to spin in order to fly. But you know what’s significantly better than all of those options (as long as you’re not allergic to cats)? Playing with a bunch of kittens!

Come aboard the first cat café train. It’s in Japan (duh).

The story of this little Snowpiercer full of fluff, via Japan Today, begins with a movement in Japan to cut down on the euthanization of stray cats. To help bring the number of stray cats down, cat lovers have started setting up cafés where people can come, enjoy some leisurely time around cats, and yes, hopefully adopt one or two or several dozen of them.

The café train is the result of a combined effort between a local NGO named Kitten Cafe Sanctuary and Yoro Railway Co Ltd., and is a new twist on the cat café concept. It invites people to zip around the Gifu Prefecture (a district in the heart of Japan) aboard a train while about ankle-deep in little kittens that have unbearably cute adopt-me-immediately eyes.

There doesn’t seem to be any real option for food or drinks however, so the “café” portion of the cat café name may be a bit of a misnomer. But any mouths aboard this train are probably permanently stuck in the awwww position anyway, right?

Although it’s unclear if the cat café train will run continuously, events like these seem to be working to save stray cats in Japan. The Star Online notes in the video above that there’s been a huge drop in the number of cats euthanized over the last few years, and there’s even been a crowdfunding campaign proposed for an island ruled by cats. Which means, at least for Japan, the future is clearly feline.

What do you think about this cat café train? Is this movement to cut down on cat culling on the right track? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
