THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA Reimagines a Classic Mexican Folktale

On July 13, New Line Cinema revealed a teaser for a film that had likely flown beneath many fans’ radars…

For those who recognized the name, the film is likely a terrifying notion. But many were left wondering just what or who La Llorona was.

“La Llorona” literally means “the crier,” though the folkloric figure is more commonly known as “the Weeping Woman.” Depending on the variation of the legend, La Llorona is a woman who lost or killed her children and is damned to spend all eternity searching for more children to take their place. And at San Diego Comic-Con’s Scare Diego event, it was confirmed that James Wan is producing a retelling of the classic story, directed by Michael Chavez.

The stars of the film—Linda Cardellini, Patricia Velasquez, and Raymond Cruz—joined Chavez and Wan on stage to talk about the ’70s-set horror, and the process of reimagining such a vital part of Mexican folklore. Velasquez emphasized how respectful she felt this version of the story was, and how important that was to her; she told the audience that Llorona “lives and breathes” in her culture.

For Cruz, it was all about highlighting the scares, which were plentiful in the three clips that we saw. “We were scared s***less with La Llorona,” Cruz yelled excitedly at the crowd. “Now we can share that with you.”

If you like terrified children, creepy veiled women, and lots of jump scares, then The Curse of La Llorona is made with you in mind! The film doesn’t come out until April next year, though, so you’ll have to wait a while to meet La Llorona in person…
