The Cast of PREACHER on Bringing the Comic to TV

What has improvised rocket launchers, mid-air battles with Irish vampires, and more exploding Tom Cruises than you know what to do with? AMC’s Preacher, which made its triumphant premiere last night. The hotly anticipated adaptation of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s darkly comedic comic book series has had a long, winding road to television, but last night’s debut proved that it was worth the wait.

Directed and developed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, this version of Preacher isn’t a word-for-word adaptation of the comics; in fact, that was something that Ennis specifically advised Rogen and Goldberg against doing. By reimagining core elements of the comic and rearranging the chronology of certain narrative elements, they have managed to create a version of Preacher that has a modernity the story desperately needed for today’s audiences while still managing to remain authentic to its source material.

In advance of the show’s premiere, I sat down with stars Dominic Cooper (Jesse Custer), Joseph Gilgun (Cassidy), Ian Colletti (Arseface), showrunner Sam Catlin, and Preacher co-creator Garth Ennis about what to expect from this season, how the show came into its current form, and much more.

Plus, we asked the cast and crew the most difficult question of all: if they had Jesse’s Word of God powers, who in the cast would they use it on and what would they make them do? You can find that video exclusively on our Facebook page. Honest to god, it’s a doozy.

Preacher airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC.
