First person shooters have taken over the gaming world. From Call of Duty to Halo, everyone loves to play them, team up to play them, or ridicule each other WHILE playing them. Fallout and Skyrim have even taken the first person aspect and added it into the role-playing realm, but what if instead of an assault rifle, you got to use Mjolnir or Captain America’s shield? What if you were able to see through the Hulk’s eyes and do that cool “Thunderclap” move he does all the time? This is what The Avengers‘ first-person game could’ve been.
Even though you won’t get to play it, the above video gives you an idea as to what could have been. Video game developer THQ was tasked in 2010 with creating a third person adventure game based on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, with it scheduled to be released around the same time as the 2012 Avengers film. Wanting to shy away from what had already been done with Marvel games, the developers decided to change course and make the game a first-person actioner. Very loosely based on the 2008 story Secret Invasion (Brian Michael Bendis was even brought in to write the game’s script), the Avengers are tasked with stopping an attack on the planet from the invading Skrull army. The game did take some plot points directly from the comic, as it had Skrull leader Princess Veranke infiltrating the team disguised as Spider-Woman, and the Fantastic Four’s Baxter Building sent to the Negative Zone, preventing the FF from assisting the Avengers.
Players would start the game with Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor to choose from, with Hawkeye and Black Widow unlockable as you progressed through the game. Concept art shows that Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers) and War Machine would have also been playable. Future levels would have also included the Avengers fighting Ultron and his creation the Vision but alas, none of this would come to pass.
