Surprise! It’s a New CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Trailer

Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. surprised audiences on Jimmy Kimmel Live Tuesday night with a brand new trailer for Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War. Ever since Disney and Marvel debuted a plethora of exclusive footage at August’s D23 Expo, fans have been clamoring to see more of the highly anticipated film (as well as tweeting me tons and tons of Bucky x Cap slash art). While it shares some shots with the footage shown at D23, this is an entirely new trailer, focusing primarily on the brewing battle between Captain America and Iron Man.

As the subtitle suggests, this film is pitting two of Marvel’s mightiest heroes against one another across ideological and, eventually, actual battle lines, bringing much of the Marvel Cinematic Universe along with it.

The trailer sets up the primary conflict of the film, which is one of Iron Man supporting increased governmental regulation of superpowered individuals and Captain America opposing it. It’s mildly horrifying that the core debate of the original 2006 comic series still rings true today, but that is more of a reflection on the world around us than the source material. Regardless, it seems as though in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that no action is without a reaction, and there are consequences to everything, including saving the world.

One of the greatest scenes in the trailer is a superpowered smackdown at what appears to be an airfield between Team Cap and Team Iron Man. Behind Cap stands Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and Falcon, while Iron Man stands side-by-side with War Machine. In the midst of the melee, we get a crystal clear look at Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther, who seems to be throwing down with the Winter Soldier, meaning that the Wakandan warrior will likely be fighting on Team Tony. Now that is a fight I want to see. Man, that armor looks so slick in action.

Although not everyone will manage to escape unscathed. It looks like War Machine takes a beating in the trailer. Could he wind up filling the role of Goliath in the eponymous 2006 comic book series? Something tells me probably not, but I’ve seen herrings far redder than this in my day.

Last, but not least, the trailer culminates in a climactic battle between Captain America, Iron Man, and Winter Soldier, with the two former war buddies beating down the billionaire genius playboy philanthropist. Instead of introducing the New Warriors and Speedball this time around, it looks as though the Winter Soldier and his checkered past will be one of the primary targets in Tony’s crosshairs. Of course, when you come for Bucky, you’d best come correct because he’s a Soviet-trained, steel-armed badass who don’t need no man.

Disney and Marvel also released a brand new poster along with the trailer, featuring the two Avengers looking like they’re awfully mad at one another. Or about to kiss. Depends on whether or not you ask Tumblr. Hell, maybe it’s both–weird things happen when tensions are running high.

Here is the official synopsis:

Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.”

Captain America: Civil War premieres on May 6, 2016.
