TEEN WOLF Recap: The Desert Wolf Makes Her Move in ‘The Sword and the Spirit’

There’s nothing like the love a mother has for her daughter. Unless, of course, you’re a mother on Teen Wolf. Then, you either commit your daughter to a very obviously dangerous and corrupt mental institution or try to kill her with a shotgun. Sweet, right?

The Desert Wolf finally made her way to Beacon Hills in the MTV supernatural drama’s latest episode, “The Sword and the Spirit.” And while she and Malia faced off, Scott’s pack learned some shocking information about the Beast of Gévaudan, and Lydia learned some harsh truths about her gift of a banshee scream. It was a pretty action-packed night! Let’s get right into recapping all of it.

The Argent men (yes, both of them… how weird was it seeing Chris and Gerard working together?!) got to work finding the Beast, and ran into the Dread Doctors while in pursuit in the sewers. Surprise of the night #1: Gerard knows the frequency at which the Dread Doctors operate, and can use that against them. That sounds like it’s going to be important going forward. Surprise of the night #2: The Argents found 23 bodies in the sewers… and none of the victims were killed there.

Yeah, that means that all 23 murder victims had been killed somewhere else by the Beast, and the Dread Doctors have been covering up for it, dragging the bodies and dumping them in the sewers. And it’s been going way too well for these villains so far. This discovery sent Beacon Hills into chaos: school activities were canceled, a county-wide curfew was enacted, police began roaming the halls of the high school with shotguns. It’s not good.

While all this Beast mania was going down, Malia deemed it the perfect time to go along with a very bad plan to let Theo inject her with wolfsbane so he may use the Dread Doctors’ equipment in their lair to find the Desert Wolf. Since she can’t know exactly where their lair is, wolfsbane shot to the neck it is. Yeah, this can’t go wrong. When she woke up again, she realized Theo tied her to a horrible looking operating table and wanted to put some kind of torture device on her face. Apparently, that would help her locate her mother. This all sounded very unbelievable, but Malia went along with it anyways. Yikes. Surprise of the night #3: It actually worked! Malia learned where her mother was keeping Deaton… and they’re already in Beacon Hills. She enlisted Braeden and Theo to storm the hideout, because that sounds like the most trustworthy team. (That was sarcasm.)

In Eichen House, Lydia kept hallucinating that she was talking to the sassy dead Banshee Meredith (a.k.a. the Benefactor), trying to learn how to use her voice as a weapon. Meredith had learned to use her voice like a bomb, but kept insisting that Lydia would need to learn to use hers like a bullet. Lydia didn’t see the point in listening to Meredith, though, since their whole conversation was, in fairness, not really happening. Her body was still laying in her cell, comatose, staring at the ceiling. But Meredith proved that her visions were still real by using her own banshee voice to hurt Lydia. And that’s when Lydia got a banshee premonition of the Desert Wolf killing Malia. Sounds like Malia’s plan to trust Theo isn’t going to work out for her. Nope, that’s not surprise of the night #4. Because duh.

Down in everyone’s favorite tunnels (seriously, does the whole town know how to get into the sewers?), Scott and Liam finally had a heart-to-heart in which Liam once again sorta apologized for killing Scott. Turns out, Liam hadn’t actually said the words “I’m sorry” to Scott yet because he didn’t want to just say it. He wanted to do something to prove he actually meant it, and he figured he could only do that by saving Scott’s life. Scott’s hilarious response? “You’ll probably get the chance.” That could not be any truer.

After the Alpha and Beta made up, they found the Argents in the sewers. That’s when Scott finally learned that Chris helped to heal Gerard, and that he has been working with the former-villain to learn everything he can about the Beast and how to stop it. To say Scott was furious would be an understatement, but he trusts Chris, and didn’t push the issue. Chris then showed Scott and Liam the painting of the Beast and Hellhound fighting; the bodies amounted at their feet, and Scott realized those dead bodies would be everyone if they can’t figure out a way to stop the Beast. He also realized he already knew a Hellhound: Parrish. So Gerard and Chris finally fill Parrish in about what he is. It’s about time!

Meanwhile, at the Desert Wolf’s location, Theo sold out Malia and Braeden for some shiny werewolf claws. Once again, not surprising. This kid is pure evil. When will Scott’s pack learn they really can’t trust him?! After a shotgun shell to the gut, it looked like the Desert Wolf was going to kill Malia to steal her power. Thankfully, that’s the precise moment when Lydia finally learned to channel her voice like a weapon. She screamed, and it reached all the way to Malia, who used that to fight back against her mother. Unfortunately, that’s also when the Beast showed up (horrible timing). Malia, Braeden and Deaton barely escaped with their lives, while the Desert Wolf got away. At least Malia helped save Deaton, earning her place back in Scott’s pack. And it’s a good thing she, Stiles, and Liam are back in his good graces and Kira’s back by his side—he’s going to need all the help he can get to break Lydia out of Eichen House. Finally!

While all this was going on, Theo’s chimeras tracked down and captured Deucalion (although he put up a hell of a fight). Turns out he’s blind again now, since the druid’s healing of his eyes proved temporary. He knew all about the Beast, and he knew that Theo wanted him to reveal how he might steal its power. And Deucalion will tell him exactly that… if Theo gets him Scott’s eyes on the tips of his claws in return. The enemy of his enemy, and all that. Scott better watch his back… and his eyes!
