Teaser for DOCTOR WHO ‘Under the Lake’ Has Freaky Blind Ghosts

We’re officially back into it, folks! Doctor Who Series 9 is in full swing following a masterful two-parter from showrunner Steven Moffat (you can read my full thoughts on “The Magician’s Apprentice” and “The Witch’s Familiar” by clicking on the episode titles). But as great as I thought those episodes were, I’ve been much more excited to see some of the other stories this year by some of the other writers. Case in point, “Under the Lake,” the first part of an adventure written by Being Human creator and longtime Who writer Toby Whithouse.

From the look of the 30-second preview, which of course played at the end of “The Witch’s Familiar,” it appears to be another Second or Third Doctor-style, base-under-siege story but with a haunted house twist. The official synopsis for the episode calls it an “impossible threat” attacking an underwater base in the future. “But what is behind these terrifying events? And can they really be haunted by Ghosts?” The ghosts, which all seem to have no eyes, are wearing Victorian garb. My theory? They built an underwater base right over where a ship sank in the ocean. Maybe a Titanic or Lusitania-inspired tragedy? Just my theory, but I think it could be cool. Although, there weren’t a whole lot of sunken ships in lakes. So what do I know?

I’m also really looking forward to what everyone has been calling the fun years for the Twelfth Doctor and Clara, just going off and doing adventurey things without any big personal crises holding them back. Although, that probably can’t last for long.

“Under the Lake” premieres Saturday, October 3, at 9pm ET/PT on BBC America, and be sure to check back on Nerdist once you’ve seen it for my review!

What do you think of the green-tinted sci-fi haunted house going on in the preview above? Let me know in the comments below!
