THE NEVERENDING STORY Meets THE HOBBIT When Rock Biter Fills in for Smaug

J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit might be a timeless classic, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t go for a little revamping. Maybe if you subbed in another character from a favorite work of fantasy fiction—say, The Neverending Story‘s Rock Biter—in place of the gold-hoarding dragon Smaug, it might just spice things up.

In this latest clip from our Alpha series Talkin’ Toons, host Rob Paulsen was joined by the silky, dulcet tones of fellow voice actor Alan Oppenheimer. The two recreated the memorable meeting of Bilbo Baggins and the terrible Smaug from the second Hobbit film. Rob filled in for Bilbo, and Alan took on the role of Smaug as his character Rock Biter from The Neverending Story.

With all due respect to the smooth voice of Benedict Cumberbatch, Alan Oppenheimer has some of the best pipes we’ve ever heard, and his might be the finest talking dragon we’ve ever heard. Yes, that does include Sean Connery in DragonHeart. I’d chew on rocks every day if I thought it would make my voice sound so sweet.

Of course this is just a clip from Talkin’ Toons, and if you want to see entire episodes—along with the rest of the many great shows we have there—you need to be a member of our interactive online Alpha community. The first 30 days are free, so sign up now.
