TALES FROM THE BORDERLANDS Debuts First Trailer, Suckerbutts

“This place is a garbage-land of sand and sadness.”

In case Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel wasn’t enough to scratch your Pandoran itch, Telltale Games has unveiled the first trailer for Tales from the Borderlands, its new episodic series based on 2K and Gearbox’s popular FPS titles. Titled “Zer0 Sum”, the first episode takes us from Hyperion’s orbital base to the dusty devastation of Pandora, where our heroes encounter everything from rampaging robots to bilious bandits to rival Vault Hunters and beyond. Judging by the trailer, it’s going to combine the high-stakes choice-and-consequence gameplay for which Telltale is known with the rich, darkly humorous world of Borderlands in all the right ways.

The game features two main characters and tells their story from a sort of Rashomon-like perspective with each character providing bits and pieces of the overarching narrative, often contradicting one another, leaving you never quite sure who is telling the truth and who is selling you a lifetime supply of snake oil. While you may not be able to trust your narrators, you can trust that their dulcet tones are packed with star power. Troy Baker voices Rhys, one of your protagonists, who is a cog in the Hyperion corporate machine with aspirations of following in Handsome Jack’s footsteps. You’ll also play as Fiona, voiced by Laura Bailey, who is a Pandoran con artist on the verge of a massive score.

You may have heard some other familiar voices during the trailer too. Dameon Clarke will reprise his role as Handsome Jack, Patrick Warburton plays Rhys’ douchey Hyperion boss Vasquez, Erin Yvette plays the the mysterious Sasha, and our own Chris Hardwick plays the nebbish, neurotic accountant/Rhys’ best bud Vaughn. All of these characters will come together as Rhys and Fiona desperately try to recover a large amount of cash that doesn’t necessarily belong to them, but they both lay claim to nonetheless.

The series will span five episodes–a standard recently bucked by the forthcoming Game of Thrones Telltale series—and will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC, MAC, and will come to iOS and Android by the end of 2014. Individual episodes will retail for $4.99 and a season pass is available for $19.99 on the PlayStation Network and the Xbox Games Store, as well as $24.99 on Steam.
