Anyone who has ever watched a horror movie is probably familiar with âthe final girlâ trope. Itâs almost always the lone, often virginal, heroine who finds it within herself to kill the slasher and escape with her life. The problem with that scenario is that there usually arenât many survivors left when the credits roll!
Director Todd Strauss-Schulsonâs new horror comedy, The Final Girls, revisits this idea when Max (Taissa Farmiga) and her friends find themselves trapped in Camp Bloodbath, the very Friday the 13th-like slasher film that starred the late Amanda Cartwright (Malin Akerman), Maxâs mom.
The first trailer for The Final Girls has been released, and it reveals how Max and her friends enter the Camp Bloodbath movieverse and why they canât simply ride the coattails of Paula (Chloe Bridges), the original final girl in the film. If they want to survive, Max and her mom have to find a way to kill the seemingly immortal slasher on their own.
Former Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev costars in The Final Girls as Maxâs friend, Vicki, with Alexander Ludwig as Chris, Alia Shawkat as Gertie, Thomas Middleditch as Duncan, and Adam Devine as Kurt. The screenplay for The Final Girls was written by M.A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller.
The Final Girls was screened at South by Southwest earlier this year, where it won the Audience Award for Feature Film. Itâs next screening will be September 19th as part of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festivalâs Midnight Madness. The Final Girls will get a limited theatrical release in the U.S. on October 9, before heading to video-on-demand.
