Taika Waititi’s HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE Looks Criminally Fun

While we still have to wait a while for Thor: Ragnarok, director Taika Waititi gave Sundance a taste of his upcoming smaller budget Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

According to the plot synopsis, Ricky (Julian Dennison) is a defiant young city kid who finds himself on the run with his cantankerous foster uncle Hec (Sam Neill) and their dog Tupac. A manhunt ensues and the two have to get over their differences to survive as a family or risk having to deal with Child Services.

The “Real Bad Egg” teaser shows us a few of Ricky’s offenses and they’re are listed off with the comedic timing that only Waititi could bring us. The dry humor of New Zealand comedy is certainly present in the teaser and if Waititi’s previous work is any indication we’re all in for a treat. Seeing Ricky act out in menacing ways while not being what most would consider terrible crimes are treated as such, and the police officer at the end dead-panning her run-in with Ricky when he took too long in a crosswalk as if it was a war story, is the perfect capper for the teaser.

If you’re somehow still on the fence of whether or not this will be great (what’s wrong with you? It totally will be!) and haven’t had the pleasure of seeing Waititi’s other work, we can tell you Eagle vs. Shark and Boy are available on Netflix while the fantastic What We Do in the Shadows is on Amazon and is well worth your time and money.

Are you as excited as we are for Hunt for the Wilderpeople? Let us know in the comments below!
