Taika Waititi Developing WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS TV Spin-Off

Taika Waititi Developing WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS TV Spin-Off

What’s the secret life of vampires really like? As immortal beings, they have a lot of time to kill. Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s 2014 mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows went behind the scenes and proved a comedic look at the sorts of problems vampire roommates face—would you want to harass a hundreds of years old supernatural being about not doing the dishes when he was supposed to? The hilarious special set in Wellington, New Zealand also visited with other creatures, including werewolves. And while the wolves in the mockumentary are getting a feature film sequel called We’re Wolves, we’re getting a TV series spin-off too: Paranormal Event Response Unit.

The Hollywood Reporter tipped us off to the news that New Zealand On Air has placed a six-episode order for the spin-off. Waititi and Clement pitched the series last year but weren’t sure if they would receive funding. What’s the hook? I’m so glad you asked: Paranormal Event Response Unit will star Mike and Karen, the cops seen briefly in What We Do in the Shadows.

We’ll follow the stalwart officers as they work to protect the residents of Wellington from the supernatural. Their unit’s role means the potential to encounter all kinds of wackiness is on the table, and based on the type of humor we know can happen in this world, the door’s wide open. Now, we only have to hope Paranormal Event Response Unit makes its way outside New Zealand so everyone around the world can see it.

Have you watched What We Do in the Shadows yet? What did you think about it? Share opinions in the comments.
