Nerdist Presents

Superman, Batman, Iron Man, and More Check Their Privilege in TOY SHELF Episode 1

What do you call it when someone can harness unfathomable powers from Earth’s sun? What about when they are injected with performance-enhancing drugs that turn them into a supreme fighting machine? And what’s the word for when some inherits an obscene amount of wealth from their parents which they use to create ego-feeding super tools?

Privilege.

And while you’d think that being endowed with special abilities and giant advantages in life would be enough to instill a little humility and perspective in our most beloved heroes, you’d be wrong. Because even the most powerful beings on the planet have trouble accepting that they’ve had a head start on the rest of the toy bin.

Nerdist is happy to bring to you the first episode in our new series Toy Shelf, which shows the truth about what happens with our action figures when we leave the room (the darker side of the matter that Pixar has kept from us). In the premiere, Batman, Superman, Iron Man, and Captain America argue over which among them has had the most privilege in life (if “privilege” even exists, that is… sigh), each trying to prove he had the hardest climb to the top shelf.

Not even the presence of some self-made super villains is enough to show them that yes, they’ve had some help becoming who they are. Because growing up on a farm isn’t really that much of a hardship when you can literally fly. (Apparently the sun doesn’t give you super self-awareness.)

Which one of these four superheroes is the most privileged? Tell us in the comments below.
