SUPERGIRL Flies to The CW for Season 2

The rumors are true. Supergirl will be back for a second season, but the series is leaving CBS and Los Angeles behind.

According to Deadline, negotiations with CBS have been finished and Supergirl is cleared for a second season on The CW alongside The Flash, Arrow, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. To facilitate the move, production of Supergirl is being relocated to Vancouver, which just happens to be where all of The CW’s other DC series are being filmed. That should make crossovers a lot easier!

But how would Supergirl be integrated with the rest of the DC dramas? The recent crossover episode with The Flash established that Supergirl’s adventures are taking place on a separate world. There’s no reason to change that just because Supergirl is on a new network. But it does open the door to featuring Melissa Benoist as the Supergirl we know and love on the other shows. Or she could also appear as an alternate version of Supergirl who just happens to live on Earth-CW.

While it’s harder to see how Arrow could crossover with Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow has the Waverider, a ship that can literally go anywhere…which makes it a natural fit for traveling between alternate Earths. Having all four shows on a single network could also lead to a very wild four-way crossover story, which is something that we’d love to see.

With this announcement, there is some potentially bad news. The budget for Supergirl will be significantly less than it was on CBS. It’s unclear if there will be any cuts to the cast to bring those numbers down. There may also be fewer episodes of Supergirl next season, but we won’t know for sure until The CW unveils its lineup for its Fall 2016 season.
