SUPERGIRL Casts Its Superman in TEEN WOLF’s Tyler Hoechlin

Last week, word broke that Supergirl would be featuring the title character’s famous cousin, Superman, in the second season premiere. Today, The CW confirmed casting on TV’s new Man of Steel: one Tyler Hoechlin!

“Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages,” said Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg. “This worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman. We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character.”

Hoechlin has previously appeared in Everybody Wants Some!, Road to Perdition, and Hall Pass, but he’s best known for starring in the Teen Wolf TV series as Derek Hale. Hoechlin is also the second leading actor from Teen Wolf to land a part in The CW’s DC dramas. And although Hoechlin is only slated to appear in two episodes (so far), his new role still trumps Colton Haynes’ Arsenal on Arrow. Take that, Jackson!

As for Hoechlin’s place among the live-action Supermen, he’s the sixth actor to play the Last Son of Krypton on television and the first since Tom Welling’s 10-year run as Clark Kent on Smallville. But unlike Welling, we’re probably going to see Hoechlin wear the famous Superman costume for more than just a few seconds of screen time.

The most enticing thing about Hoechlin’s guest appearance on Supergirl is that it may open the door for him to appear on The CW’s other DC superhero shows. We’d love to see Superman race Grant Gustin’s Flash or meet Stephen Amell’s Green Arrow at some point in the future. For the first time in a long time, that possibility actually exists.

Supergirl season two will premiere this fall on The CW.
