The upcoming DC Comics film Suicide Squad features Academy Award-nominated actor Will Smith as the expert marksman, Deadshot, and Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto as arguably the most famous villain in comics history, The Joker. The two spent a lot of time together on set making the movie. Hopefully the two of them will have a chance to meet for the first time at the film’s premiere.
No, seriously, for the first time. So what the heck are we talking about? It’s kind of amazing (and a tad weird).
Smith told interviewer Zane Lowe on Beats 1 radio that even though he spent half a year with Leto, he didn’t meet Jared the human — just his infamous character. “I’ve never actually met Jared Leto,” Smith said. “We worked together for six months and we’ve never actually exchanged a word outside of action and cut … I’ve only ever spoken to him as Deadshot and him as the Joker … he was all in as the Joker.”
The Suicide Squad stuff starts at about the 15:45 mark, but watch the whole thing to hear more about Smith’s career, children, an upcoming tour with DJ Jazzy Jeff, and some Bad Boys 3 info.
While we imagine the dedication it takes to play a character as intense as The Joker at all times is truly amazing (it sounds incredibly draining, both physically and mentally), it was probably also tiresome to be around it all the time. Somewhere in the great actor’s hall in the sky we can only imagine that Sir Laurence Olivier is shaking his head sadly at this story.
Suicide Squad opens next August, but in the meantime you can enjoy Will Smith’s first musical release in 10 years, a remix of Bomba Estéreoâ’s “Fiesta”.
What fictional character do you think would be the best to be around all the time? Which one would be the worst? Tell us in the comments section below.
