SUICIDE SQUAD’s Soundtrack Debuted at Number One

So that’s it, huh? Suicide Squad has some kind of number one soundtrack?

Despite virtually universal negative reviews of DC’s latest superhero film—that young, not fresh 27 percent on Rotten Tomatoes—Suicide Squad is still hitting its profit marks ($465.3 worldwide), and that includes its original soundtrack, which just went number one in the Billboard charts. Having sold 182,000 units in its first week, according to Billboard, the Suicide Squad soundtrack had the best debut for a soundtrack in a year and a half.

While this soundtrack is no Awesome Mix Vol. 1, the tracklist does boast an impressive melange of popular and independent artists and some of the songs are actually pretty cool. While some may consider Panic! At The Disco’s cover of “Bohemian Rhapsody” blasphemy, it is a pretty faithful take on a beloved classic that many people were at least curious to hear. There are other standout tracks from such artists as Kehlani, Action Bronson, Kevin Gates, and of course, Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son” is an infinitely repayable classic.

But if Suicide Squad: The Album‘s tracklist is indicative of one thing, it is that the film is tonally inconsistent and totally all over the place. Sure, soundtracks can be diverse, but they need to be unified at least around some sort of theme instead of tacked together in a seemingly slapdash manner. Also, serious question: did the extended musical scenes that comprised Suicide Squad‘s narrative count toward the total stream of this record, because that would explain a lot. With how muddled and confusing the music and film industries are, I would not be surprised if that were the case.

What did you guys think of Suicide Squad? Love it? Hate it? What about its soundtrack? Let us know in the comments below.

Here are all the easter eggs you might have missed in Suicide Squad:
