Thereâs nothing like taking an after-dinner stroll down your favorite food street when you suddenly sense something; a presence you’ve not felt since… And as you gaze upwards you see a true to life giant TIE Fighter on top of a building, then suddenly you get that feeling, like you’re being seduced by the dark side of the Force. Oh wait, it’s a hunger for bread pudding.
This Star Wars Day, B Sweet in the heart of Sawtelle’s Japantown in West LA has gone above and beyond and really taken May the 4th to heart. For one thing, thereâs a giant TIE Fighter on the roof of their shop. Step inside and there are pool noodle lightsabers for kids (and adults) to pick up and use for photo opps. They’re even encouraged to battle right there in the shop.
The TV screens on the wall all display the Star Tours itinerary board from the Disneyland ride as the accompanying soundtrack plays from speakers above. In the corner thereâs a remote controlled droid moving about and the shelves are stacked with Star Wars merch, displaying everything from purses to action figures. Thereâs even themed Star Wars cupcake art on the walls.
Decor is one thing, but weâre in it for the sweets and B Sweet doesnât disappoint. Known for their donut bread pudding, theyâve come up with two special desserts just for Star Wars Day. Darth Brownie bread pudding is like a warm chocolate lava cake drizzled with a rich chocolate syrup. Itâs even better topped with ice cream. Thereâs also an Ube-Wan Kenobi bread pudding, which is a deep purple cake topped with a bright green drizzle. True, ube is a purple yam but it makes a great base for desserts and this bread pudding is full of color and the flavor is exquisite.
In addition to the spectacular bread puddings, the other specials they have for May the 4th are a Princess Leia Cinnamon Roll Cake complete with tiny cinnamon buns, Vegan Yoda Green Tea Cupcakes and 3 themed Cakes in a jar: the R2-D2 (vanilla), Chewbacca (chocolate) and Boba Fett (red velvet), cake and frosting layered and served in a mason jar.
B Sweet did a fabulous job of getting into the spirit of Star Wars Day, and by the line out the door you can tell that dessert lovers agree. If only theyâd keep this theme up all year round. Maybe permanently trick out the interior to look like Mos Eisley Cantina, have Blue Milk on tap, the sugary possibilities are endless.
B Sweetâs Star Wars themed menu lasts all weekend until May the 4th. Go to the shop in full Star Wars costume and get a free bread pudding. Get on it, cosplayers!
