Thanks to the unexpected success of the Netflix original movie, Hush, director Mike Flanagan may soon have the opportunity to bring one of Stephen King‘s most esoteric novels to film.
Via AV Club, Flanagan revealed Netflix’s interest in adapting King’s 1992 novel, Gerald’s Game while speaking with Rue Morgue. “All of Netflixâs numbers are proprietary, so I donât get to look at them, but the way Iâve heard people talking, itâs been viewed an amazing number of times, and the reception has been very, very positive,” said Flanagan. “Coincidentally, Stephen King watched Hush at home on Netflix and tweeted about it, which kind of blew my mind. And that got us talking about Geraldâs Game again.â
As noted by Flanagan during that interview, one of the reasons that Gerald’s Game hasn’t been previously adapted is because it’s primarily about a woman’s desperate attempt to get out the handcuffs securing her to a bed after she accidentally killed her husband during a sex game gone wrong. Of course, there’s more to it than that, and the novel also explores the woman’s hidden secrets, the slow loss of her sanity, and the emergence of a monster that may or may not be real.
According to Flanagan, Netflix’s interest in the Gerald’s Game film means that he doesn’t have to soften its edges or worry about forcing the story to become a more marketable movie. There doesn’t appear to be a firm timetable to begin production on the Gerald’s Game adaptation, but Flanagan appears to be confident that it will go forward.
