Stephen Colbert’s THE DAILY SHOW Reunion Was Heartwarming and Hilarious

Saturday Night Live is often credited as being the ultimate comedy incubator, where fresh-faced talents go to get their starts before expanding to bigger and better things. Since Jon Stewart became host in 1999, The Daily Show has fostered early career boosts for stars-to-be like Steve Carell, Olivia Munn, Jessica Williams, and a bunch of others.

One of the most famous alums is The Late Show host Stephen Colbert, who began at The Daily Show in 1997 before leaving to host the spin-off series The Colbert Report in 2005. Yes, it’s really been 20 years since Colbert started at The Daily Show, and to mark the occasion, he invited fellow alums Stewart, John Oliver, Ed Helms, Rob Corddry, and Samantha Bee to The Late Show for a super fun reunion.

Colbert kicked off the festivities with a lighthearted self-deprecating jab at the bunch, saying, “This arrangement we have right now is exactly something we would have made fun of on The Daily Show, because it looks like a morning show right now.”

Then they started to wax nostalgic, as Stewart and Colbert told the story of how the two met. Colbert actually began at the show before Stewart did, and the two had their first encounter at the press conference introducing Stewart as the show’s new host, replacing original leader Craig Kilborn.

“When it was announced you were going to be the person… they didn’t tell anyone on staff that Jon was going to be the new host, they just announced a press conference,” Colbert said. “And I said, ‘Well, on The Daily Show, I think we would cover this press conference.’ So I just showed up unannounced and I said, ‘Now Mr. Stewart, I’m going to ask you a question: The fact that you’ve been announced as the host of The Daily Show, how does that impact my chances of becoming the host of The Daily Show?'”

The segment goes a lot deeper than that, so check out both parts for yourself above, and fill the comments section below with your favorite Daily Show memories.
