Who Are Matt Smith and Keri Russell Playing in STAR WARS: EPISODE IX?

Warning: There are potential spoilers ahead for Star Wars: Episode IX!

The Force is with us as we eagerly await the end of the Skywalker saga in Star Wars: Episode IX. Filming is already underway, and director J.J. Abrams has lined up a superb supporting cast including ex-Doctor Who star Matt Smith, The Americans‘ Keri Russell, and even former Lost co-star, Dominic Monaghan. Their presence has some fans speculating which characters they will portray in the film. Today’s Nerdist News consults the Jedi archive to bring you some possibilities.

Join host and the last survivor of the Expanded Universe Jessica Chobot as she runs down some of the most intriguing possibilities. As much as we’d love to see Russell play Mara Jade, we don’t think it’s in the cards. It’s also unlikely that she’s going to play Rey’s mom. If we had to guess, we think Russell could be one of the Knights of Ren who could team up with Kylo Ren for the final showdown against the Resistance.

Have you ever noticed British actors are almost always villains in the Star Wars universe? We don’t think Smith will be breaking that tradition–but that maybe from necessity more than anything else. The First Order has a serious lack of leadership, and neither Kylo Ren nor General Hux can fill the void alone.

As for Monaghan, we’re assuming he has a small role…and that’s not a hobbit joke!

Who do you think Smith and Russell will portray in Star Wars: Episode IX? Share any and all theories in the comment section below!
