WARNING: Potential spoilers are ahead for Spider-Man: Far From Home!
Jake Gyllenhaal was once rumored to be up for playing Marvel’s famous wall-crawling hero if Tobey Maguire hadn’t been able to return for Spider-Man 2. And in 2019, Gyllenhaal will finally enter Spidey’s orbit in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Though it hasn’t been confirmed, early word is that Gyllenhaal will be playing Mysterio, the master of illusion and one of Spidey’s earliest foes. Today’s Nerdist News looks at the latest footage from set, which may give us a first look at Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio.
Join host Jessica Chobot, as she goes over the clips and pictures posted by Twitter user Martin Knap. According to Knap, the scene being filmed in the Czech Republic may be the finale for the movie. But more intriguingly, it sure looks like Gyllenhaal is wearing a super villain costume on the set. Assuming it is Gyllenhaal, of course.
It’s not an exact replica of Mysterio’s comic book costume, but the purple cape and gloves are similar to ones Quentin Beck has worn for the last few decades. However, he does appear to be missing Mysterio’s iconic fishbowl helmet. Now, we can understand why neither Marvel nor Sony would want to hide Gyllenhaal’s face under a mask. That doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t have the fishbowl later. It could be added later as a CGI enhancement for his costume. Or perhaps Spidey knocked off Mysterio’s helmet before this climactic scene.
