Warning! There be spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy and Seasons 1 & 2 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in this post. Look away now if you don’t want to know anything about how the two Marvel properties may synch up (although, if you don’t, why did you click on this link?!).
Welcome to fan speculation theater, where we take the pieces on the board and play the game out in our heads. We’re big fans of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. around these parts, and the second season of the show looks like it’s going to have a lot of cosmic storytelling layered into it. Most of the S.H.I.E.L.D. cast had seen Guardians of the Galaxy by the time we caught up with them at San Diego Comic-Con, so we decided to run some of our crazier cosmic theories by them. Now that the movie is out in theaters, we can share their answers with you! Some theories get shot down outright, no matter how well-liked the concept, while others raise even more possibilities and questions.
The main theory we’re positing about Season 2 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is that the Kree/Skrull War could kick off on the show or the Marvel Cinematic Universe equivalent of Skrulls at least. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is already the real-world anchor for the Marvel’s Cosmic Universe, and this scenario could play out in a myriad of ways, but we’ve got some really specific thoughts on how it will happen. Let’s look at the evidence. Skye doesn’t know who her alien parents are, but we do know that her dad is a “bad guy” after the lady in the flower dress reported back to him. Could Skye be half-Skrull? It would certainly explain why so many villagers would rather die than let S.H.I.E.L.D. agents get to her. Maybe the villagers were Skrulls in disguise.
The alien blood coursing through both Coulson and Skye’s systems is almost definitely Kree at this point. After seeing Kree warrior-zealot Ronan the Accuser running amok in Guardians, we think we’re going to see Coulson making a connection to the cosmic warmongers after he interprets all of that alien language he’s been writing everywhere. From a story perspective, it would also be interesting to see Coulson and Skye, a father/daughter pair of sorts, on opposite sides of a Kree/Skrull skirmish. The Kree would take a huge affront to a Skrull or human using their blood for healing purposes. Could a half-skrull with Kree blood in her be the spark that lights the fire? In the words we forced the notoriously tight-lipped Jeph Loeb to use, “That would be cool.”
On top of all our speculation, Mockingbird has been announced for Season 2 of the ABC show. In the comics, Mockingbird was one of the heroes that turned out to be a Skrull plant in the “Secret Invasion” event. If the show follows suit, we may have more Skrulls waiting for a fight to break out with the Kree. Maybe we’ll even see a pop-on from her longtime love interest, our favorite Hawkguy, Clint Barton. (Perhaps in time to set up where the hell he was during Cap 2 before Avengers 2 next summer?)
One final tidbit: in the rebuilding of S.H.I.E.L.D., we’d love to see Agent Sharon Carter recruited back into the organization. Considering the close ties the show will have to Agent Carter, the prequel series starring Haley Atwell, we’re willing to bet Revenge‘s Emily VanCamp will be popping up in time for sweeps to make the connection not explicitly explained in Captain America 2. In fact, we would not be surprised if she shows up as part of a C.I.A. task force tracking down rogue S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.
In the video above, we caught up with producers Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon about what to expect in S.H.I.E.L.D.’s “rebuilding year.” Clark Gregg and Ming-Na Wen weighed in on whether that alien blood in Coulson’s system will turn out to be Kree, Ming-Na Wen lets us know if she’s ready for a tussle with former Xena actress Lucy Lawless, and Clark Gregg got visibly excited at the possibility of the Kree/Skrull War breaking out with Coulson in the middle (Gregg knows his sh*t, people).
Brett Dalton and Jeph Loeb both said Ward’s return would be something special, with Loeb coming over the top of our suggestion that he become the Punisher. Obviously Ward’s not going to be the Punisher, buuut Dalton would make an excellent Frank Castle, just sayin’.

You guys actually asked the question about the Punisher very sloppily and gave him another out by including “is released from SHIELD custody”, and since we know now that he ESCAPED, then the correct answer to that is indeed that it’s not going to happen, regardless of whether or not he becomes the Punisher.

I think Sky is Captain Marvel or possibly Ms. Marvel
Though the Punisher thing wouldn’t work at this point, given his skill set and how some of the history lines up, I wouldn’t be shocked if Ward turns out to be Bullseye.
I’m honestly really intrigued to see where things go in this next season. I’m curious if the alien body(which pretty much HAS to be Kree at this point, right?) will end up being Mar’Vell. Garrett talked about how he “saw the universe”, and that lines up with Captain Marvel’s cosmic awareness powers.
Dalton was designed to be the Punisher. Wondering if this was possible (or moreso : if his older brother might be the punisher somehow, based on childhood punishment trauma) was a big part of why I enjoyed him so much in the first season.
but – eventually they noted his family was kind of a big rich evil politically connected gang, which doesn’t fit at all with the character’s origins. Soo. feel like they closed the door on that.
You won’t be seeing any Skrulls. They’re most closely associated with a Fantastic Four – a Fox property. That’s why we got “Chitauri” and not Skrulls in Avengers (as was speculated, way back)
A version of the skrulls is expected
Cinematic rights and movie rights are not necessarily the same, right? Couldn’t the show have Skrulls if they never make it into the movies?
That’s a big question. ABC could do the skrulls if the Fox rights don’t cover TV.
Fox only owns the movie rights. Marvel still wholly owns the Television rights.
The T.V. World has more access than the movies. They could do a Spider-Man T.V. Show if they wanted because marvel only sold their movie rights, not all rights to their characters.
