SOUTH PARK: THE FRACTURED BUT WHOLE E3 Trailer Takes on Marvel, DC, and STAR WARS

After a morning of Microsoft’s new trailers and hardware announcements, Ubisoft has taken the E3 stage to show us what they’ve got. Along with new promos for The Division, a Star Trek VR game, and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands, we got a look at the next cinematic universe. Forget Marvel and DC; heck, don’t even bother with the new Hasbro interconnected films. Everyone can go home, because South Park‘s own superheroes, Coon and Friends, are coming for your wallets.

The trailer for Ubisoft’s South Park: The Fractured But Whole game is downright savage, taking on the entire concept of the “cinematic universe.” Cartman, a.k.a. The Coon, gathers his cohorts together for their most diabolical mission of all: to create a series of superhero movies that will make billions of dollars. It all beings with Cartman’s origin story, The Coon Movie, and continues in the now-standard team-up flick, Coon and Supercraig, followed by additional Netflix series and different phases of movie releases.

But of course, not everyone is on board with Cartman’s plan. (Personally, I would love to see a Professor Chaos film first.) Because like the title (and some of the cinematic universe missteps of years past), this type of storytelling can start feeling like a commercial for the next movie if you’re not careful. The trailer pokes fun at every franchise cliche, from the eventual splintering of the team in a Civil War to recreating the beloved classic (*cough* JJ) to the fact that we only get to see more diverse films after about a billion movies. (And we don’t get a “chick” intro until the final f*#$ing movie.) South Park has skewered society, politics, and pop culture like no one else can for decades now, and now they’ve got their sights set on modern movie franchises. The new game seems downright diabolical… and we love it.

After all, we’re huge fans of Marvel, Star Wars, and DC… but we also acknowledge there’s a lot of fun to be had at their expense. We can’t wait to play in their twisted little world.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole hits Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on December 6, 2016.
