Sonic The Hedgehog Returns to Comics in 2018

Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog has been a video game icon since his 1991 debut, and he’s also been a comic book superstar almost as long. Shortly after his debut, Archie Comics began publishing a Sonic comic book series that ran for 24 years. But now, it’s a new day for Sonic as IDW prepares to relaunch everyone’s favorite blue hedgehog with a new series after a long comic book hiatus.

Via Entertainment Weekly, IDW has announced that writer Ian Flynn and artist Tracy Yardley will be the creative team for the new Sonic the Hedgehog comic, which will be completely separate from the Archie run. However, Yardley was a fan-favorite Sonic artist for Archie and he should provide some visual consistency between the two series. Sonic the Hedgehog #1 will be released on Wednesday, April 4.

Story details for the new Sonic the Hedgehog series are still under wraps, but it’s likely that Sonic and his friends will once again go up against Dr. Eggman. As part of the relaunch in April, IDW will be releasing the first four issues on a weekly basis, with each issue focusing on one of the main characters from within the series. The first character to be featured will be Sonic’s sidekick, Tails, although we kind of hope that no one calls Tails by his given name, “Miles Prower.” That’s one piece of continuity that we can do without!

The Archie Comics Sonic comics famously expanded the universe and characters before outside legal factors forced most of those creations to be retconned away. The new Sonic comics from IDW will also introduce new characters to the official canon, and hopefully they won’t run into the same issues that hit the previous comic book series.
