SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Movie Enlists DEADPOOL Director

Back in 2012, Sonic the Hedgehog and his sidekick Tails made their film debut in the form of cameo appearances in Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph. Now, the duo is racing ever closer to their first proper big screen appearance, as the long-in-development Sonic the Hedgehog movie is making new headway with Deadpool director Tim Miller on board as executive producer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Pictures picked up the rights to make the Sonic movie after Sony ultimately passed on the project. Miller’s collaborator at Blur Studio, Jeff Fowler, is set to make his directorial debut with Sonic the Hedgehog. So far, all we know about the film’s approach is that it will blend live action and CGI animation.

Sonic has been a gaming icon since 1991, coming to rise at the height of the 16-bit era. In the early games, Sonic basically just ran around collecting rings and saving captive animals from the evil Dr. Eggman/Robotnik. Later games in the franchise added a little more story and mythology to Sonic’s background, as well as additional characters like Knuckles and Shadow. But the appeal of Sonic has never been its story–it’s always been about going as fast as possible.

Video game movies are notoriously difficult to pull off, and the initial report didn’t offer many details about how Miller and Fowler will make Sonic’s adventures more cinematic, but we’re very curious to see what they have in mind. What do you want to see in the Sonic the Hedgehog film?
