Skiing Just Got Cooler with Homemade 360° iPhone Camera

Step out onto the freshly fallen snow and take a look around at the mountains. It’s pure perfection, and basically nothing you can do with your phone’s camera is going to capture the mind-blowing beauty of what you’re looking at right in this second. Don’t worry though. Some very cool tinkerers are coming up with ways to capture the majesty of nature with something as simple as a phone, and you can see the results above.

According to YouTube, Nicolas Vuignier has been tweaking this method of video taping for about two years but feels like he’s finally gotten it perfected. The video above, and the GIF here below show you exactly how perfect it turns out an iPhone 6 (that he swears is still working and useable to this day) and some very cleverly tied string are capable of capturing perfection.

Vuignier basically MacGyvered an expensive 360° degree camera set up perfectly by carefully tying his phone up with string and taking the risk of spinning it over his head while he skied down a mountain. Considering my skiing talents start and stop with barely managing to get up the bunny hill on a tow rope, you could call my gasps as I watched the video “impressed” if nothing else.

The video went up on Reddit a few days ago, and while some readers were impressed, there are also a number hilarious albeit unconcerned notes from the peanut gallery.

Whether you think this is a great innovation that we’ll soon be seeing hit the slopes all over the world or not, this video is pretty fantastic both from the perspective of someone who loves the great outdoors and someone who gets a little bit of a thrill watching people throw themselves down an icy hill with no concern for their personal safety. Next thing you know, they’ll be finding some new way to use an iPhone camera, and I hope it has something to do with filming the Great Barrier Reefs.
