SHERLOCK Season 4 Premiere Date Revealed in New Trailer

SHERLOCK Season 4 Premiere Date Revealed in New Trailer

It’s been a minute since season three of Sherlock. By a minute, I mean 2014. We got a new Sherlock fix on New Year’s Day 2016 with a holiday special, but it wasn’t nearly enough of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman’s Dr. John Watson. Thankfully, Sherlockians don’t have to wait too much longer season four. BBC has announced new episodes are coming to both the United States and United Kingdom on January 1, 2017–barely two months from now.

BBC dropped the premiere date news on Twitter along with a new teaser trailer that’s heavy on the Moriarty. Watch:

Though Sherlock certainly has a lighthearted air now and again, it’s an intense drama. Season four looks to be the darkest of them all, what with Moriarty hanging over Sherlock’s head, as well as other threats he can’t quite pinpoint. Perhaps the line about Sherlock’s demons coming back to haunt him is the theme for what’s ahead. When production started for series four last spring, showrunner Steven Moffat said, “Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson and terror and tragedy are looming. This is the story we’ve been telling from the beginning and it’s about to reach its climax.”

Here, have some key art as well:

Like previous seasons, series four will be comprised of three episodes. The first episode is called “The Six Thatchers,” the second is “The Lying Detective,” and the third is still a mystery. That untitled episode could be the final installment of the series. Emphasis on could. Both showrunner Steven Moffat and Cumberbatch have made comments that hint at the show coming to a close. It does seem like scheduling is a tricky issue for those involved, but on the other hand, if everyone’s okay with these long breaks, maybe Sherlock will last forever.

What are your hopes for season four? Scroll to the comments and share your wildest ideas about what’s ahead.
