The 6 Scariest Underground Mines in Horror

Now that we’ve all had the time to binge watch Chilling Adventures of Sabrina you’re probably in need of some new spooky situations to get yourself into. Inspired by the Kinkle mines which are the setting for so much chaos, fear, and fun in the show, we’ve picked six of horror’s scariest subterranean offerings for you to get lost in this Halloween.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018)

The scene of multiple brutal, terrifying and torturous moments, the Kinkle Mine in Sabrina is known as the Devil’s Doorway because it leads right down to hell. That might sound preposterous but some of the core cast have definitely had a couple of spooky encounters down there, both of which may have included the Dark Lord himself. You won’t be catching us sneaking down there for a romantic rendezvous anytime soon.

My Bloody Valentine (1981)

Probably the most iconic of our cave bound creepers, this 1981 Canadian slasher is stone cold classic. Following the tragic deaths of a group of miners on Valentine’s Day, a deranged survivor of the accident terrorizes the small town where it happened. Decades later the small community is still terrified to celebrate the romantic holiday for fears that the killer will return, and when some teens defy the local tradition and hold a party the murders begin again.

The Boogens (1981)

Who knows what was going on in mines in 1981 but this B-Movie monster flick is also from the same year. If you like a good corny practical creature feature then you’ll love The Boogens, which sees a group of scaly, giant turtle-like fiends escape through the bootlegging shafts of an abandoned mine to feast upon the inhabitants of a small town in Colorado.

10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)

This stunningly creepy and grim thriller is a masterclass of fear, distrust, and paranoia. Mary Elizabeth Winstead absolutely kills as a young woman who wakes up in a bunker with two men who claim to have saved her life from an apocalyptic event. Like so many urban legends, the real threat is in the house… or is it?

Beneath (2013)

After a group of misogynists in a bar claim she’ll never be a miner, a stubborn young woman makes the questionable decision of venturing down into the mines that her father once worked in. Alas, she quickly becomes trapped–along with the group who went down with her–after the mine collapses and as the oxygen runs out, it’s every person for themself.

The Descent (2005)

Neil Marshall’s low budget horror is one of the most claustrophobic, horrifying, and brilliant genre films of the last 20 years. A year after a tragic car accident, a group of six friends go spelunking in the Appalachian mountains. After becoming trapped in the unmapped cave system, the group begin to try to find the way out only to find themselves venturing deeper and deeper within the Earth.
