Believe it or not, pudgy Italian plumber Mario is more of an athlete than he lets on. He’s been a tennis star, soccer striker, golf enthusiast, and has even gone to the Winter Olympics to take on blue speedster Sonic. This guy does everything! However, the residents of the Mushroom Kingdom have never hit the gridiron. That is, until today… well, sort of.

A fan, Sybro (via Kotaku), has created some fantastic art, imagining what a Mario Football game would look like—and it’s glorious! Even the art direction looks like something Nintendo would use. This is seriously a touchdown! Peep the rest of the images in the gallery below.

Of course, it’s only fan art at the moment, but the Big N should really consider taking this concept and turning it into a reality. It would be a great incentive to get all the pigskin fans to get on board with Nintendo’s console. With the NX’s announcement looming ever closer, it would be pretty damn cool to get a Mario Football title. Nintendo usually does a great job of turning sports games into arcade madness that’s also incredibly accessible.
